Fish Tank Decor
Decorating the aquarium is an integral part of keeping a fish tank. Decoration makes the aquarium more attractive and appealing and also helps to generate a soothing effect which a fish tank is meant for. Moreover, it helps to create a surrounding for your fish to thrive in and for you to gaze at and enjoy. Fish tank decor also creates a relaxing atmosphere for the fish as it allows them to behave as they would in their natural surroundings. Fish tend to be less scared or intimidated in open surroundings if the aquarium decor can mimic their natural habitat.

You can decorate the tank with anything which suits your tastes. Ideally, not more than 30-40% of the auquarium floor should be covered with decorations. This will not crowd the tank and at the same time give enough cover for the fish to behave naturally. Ensure that none of the decoration items is toxic to the fish or affects the water in the tank. Some materials like driftwood can adversely affect the pH level of the water.
A background is also a good idea by allowing you to hide wires and tubes behind the tank. Regarding vegetation, larger plants should be at the back while the smaller ones should be in front. Do not crowd the tank with too much variety. A few different items will make it more natural. Decoration items can also be used to hide the filter or heater or whatever else is present in the tank. Real plants are not necessary but give the tank a more natural look. So do real rocks and wood over artificial decoration.
At the end of the day, you should pick decor which suits your tastes and not follow the "if-it-fits-it-goes-in" principle. You can check out various different types of decor like lights, plants, gravel, stones, castles, rocks etc. at Home Fish Aquariums
